![]() ![]() Lastly, Arlie found that both Sally and Shirley followed the news via MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and Fox New’s Charles Krauthammer, respectively. Hochschild found this very useful and sensible as sometimes parents will know their children better than they may know themselves so talking to the previous generation can provide much more insight and depth as an individual’s values and demeanor are established by their parents. In addition, Arlie found that Sally would talk to Shirley’s parents when the two fussed too much. Arlie described this as the goal for all American relationships: “the ability to connect across difference”. The third thing Arlie was able to realize from this interaction was that despite their differences, Shirley and Sally still talked on the phone 2-3 times a week and even allowed their children to have play dates. ![]() By placing herself in the “shoes” of Shirley, she was able to gain a sense of her personal life, especially the love she has for her children. There, she was able to see the environment that Shirley surrounded herself in and found a surprisingly pleasant picture painted by Shirley for her daughter who was aspiring to be a ballerina. The second thing that Arlie did to enhance her lense on the world and those living in it was to actually stayed as Shirley’s overnight guest. Comprehension of an individual’s personal life can act as the bridge to closing the awkward gap in introducing such a topic in conversation. This was done in order for Arlie to gain an idea on how Shirley grew up and to understand why her ideologies came to be how they are. One of the first things that Arlie did in order to communicate with Shirley, a conservative Republican, was to actually first talk to Sally, a progressive Democrat and a close friend of Shirley’s. I will be attempting to follow Arlie’s lead and understand someone with a different perspective. In order to accomplish her mission, she had to put aside her emotions as well as Democratic views aside in order to be able to clearly “see” through the contradicting lense of the Right. Despite feeling and thinking the polar opposite than the Republicans, Arlie was determined to gain more knowledge. It is the journal of Arlie Russell Hochschild and it tells of her journey to learn more about the Republican party and their particular set of views. This topic piqued my interest and curiosity due to a class I am currently taking at Tacoma Community College. This will be a truly unique experience and in order to provide the most information and background that I can, I will be telling the interviewee’s story where he was born and raised, how he grew up, and what paths led him to where he is today. Hello, my name is Olivia and in this blog, I will be discovering new ideologies and interviewing an individual with a different political view than my own. ![]()
